All Happy Families Are Alike: Crises and Confrontations

Sat, Nov 5, 2016 from 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm PDT
1422 SW 11th Ave Portland, Oregon 97201

“All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” One of the most famous opening lines in literature, from Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, could have opened any of these four novels about modern American families of all kinds. The wives, daughters, and mothers who narrate the stories in Margaret Malone’s People Like You bear traumas, triumphs and tragedies. In Ramona Ausubel’s Sons and Daughters of Ease and Plenty, a New England family faces the sudden loss of the family fortune. The Johannsen family of Jim Lynch’s Before the Wind unexpectedly reunites and faces their past and present amidst a sailboat race in Puget Sound. College friends and former band mates try to hold on to their youthful identities while confronting their own evolving relationships amidst a changing Brooklyn neighborhood in Emma Straub‘s Modern Lovers. Moderated by Monika Woods.
