Joshua Beckman: On The Porous Experience of Poems In Physical and Imaginative Space

Wed, Sep 12, 2018 from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm PDT
925 SW Washington Street Portland, OR 97205

Join us for a talk by Joshua Beckman.

During 2014, Wave Books editor Joshua Beckman traveled around the country giving talks on poetry for the Bagley Wright Lecture Series. In his newly published The Lives of the Poems and Three Talks, these lectures are collected as two books in conversation. The Lives of the Poems illuminates the intimate experience of making a particular set of poems, while Three Talks explores the fluid social dynamics of poetry as it lives between readers, poems, and books.

Joshua Beckman is the author of many books, including The Lives of the Poems and Three Talks (Wave Books, 2018), The Inside of an Apple, Take It, Shake, Your Time Has Come, and two collaborations with Matthew Rohrer: Nice Hat. Thanks. and Adventures While Preaching the Gospel of Beauty. He is editor-in-chief at Wave Books and has translated numerous works of poetry and prose, including Micrograms, by Jorge Carrera Andrade, 5 Meters of Poems (Ugly Duckling Presse, 2010) by Carlos Oquendo de Amat, and Poker (Ugly Duckling Presse, 2008) by Tomaž Šalamun, which was a finalist for the PEN America Poetry in Translation Award. Beckman is the recipient of numerous awards, including a NYFA fellowship and a Pushcart Prize. He lives in Seattle and New York.

The Bagley Wright Lecture Series on Poetry seeks to provide poets with the opportunity to explore subjects of deep interest to them and to arrange for the public delivery of lectures written out of these investigations. More information can be found at our website, www.bagleywrightlectures.org.
