OPB’s Think Out Loud

Portland’s own Sallie Tisdale, author of the new essay collection Violation: Collected Essays, in conversation with OPB’s Dave Miller, host of Think Out Loud; and Garrard Conley, whose memoir Boy Erased confronts his experience at church-supported gay conversion therapy, in conversation with OPB’s Kate Davidson, host of All Things Considered.

Garrard Conley

Garrard Conley is the author of the memoir, Boy Erased, out from Riverhead (Penguin) May 2016. His work can be found in TIMEVICECNNBuzzfeed Books, Virginia Quarterly Review, and many others. He has received scholarships from the Bread Loaf, Sewanee, and Elizabeth Kostova Foundation Writers' Conferences and has facilitated craft classes for Catapult, Grub Street, Sackett Street Writers Workshop, and the Fine Arts Works Center in Provincetown. After growing up in a small Arkansan farming community, heading to a liberal arts college a few hours away, completing service for Peace Corps Ukraine, and attaining a Master's degree in creative writing and queer theory, Garrard taught literature in Sofia, Bulgaria at The American College of Sofia. He now lives in Brooklyn and teaches in NYC. Also appearing in:

Sallie Tisdale

Sallie Tisdale is the author of several books, including Advice for Future CorpsesTalk Dirty to Me, Stepping Westward, and Women of the Way. She has received a Pushcart Prize, an NEA Fellowship, the James Phelan Literary Award, and was a Dorothy and Arthur Shoenfeldt Distinguished Writer of the Year. Dave Miller

Dave Miller is the host of Oregon Public Broadcasting's daily talk show, Think Out Loud. Before coming to OPB, Dave was the senior producer of Open Source, a nationally syndicated radio show based at the NPR-affiliate station WGBH in Boston. He began his radio career as a documentary producer at Sound Portraits Productions and StoryCorps. From 2008 to 2011, he worked as the online host of the show. His stories have aired on NPR's All Things Considered, Morning Edition, and Weekend Edition Saturday. Dave graduated from Harvard University with a degree in English.
