Illustrator Draw-off!

Join us for the first annual Portland Book Festival Illustrator Draw-off! Picture book and middle grade illustrators face off in a live drawing competition. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry with laughter, you’ll cheer as Vanessa Brantley-Newton (Mary Had a Little Plan), Ben Clanton (Tater Tales), Jonathan Hill (Tales of Seventh-grade Lizard Boy), Eunice Moyle (The Cosmic Adventures of Astrid & Stella) and Tracy Subisak (Amah Faraway) face off at the drawing easel. Host and emcee Breena Bard (Trespassers, winner of the 2022 Oregon Book Award).

MASKS ARE REQUIRED AT THIS EVENT.

 


Portland Book Festival General Admission Passes are required for entry into all events. Passes are $15 in advance and $25 day of Festival. Youth 17 & under, or with a valid high school ID get in FREE. All full-priced General Admission Passes include a $5 book fair voucher and entry into Portland Art Museum. Passes admit attendees to the Festival; individual events are first-come, first-served. More info here.

Vanessa Brantley-Newton

Vanessa Brantley-Newton is a self-taught illustrator, doll maker, and crafter who studied fashion illustration at FIT and children’s book illustration at the School of Visual Arts in New York. She is the author and illustrator of Grandma’s Purse, Just Like Me, and Becoming Vanessa, and has illustrated numerous children’s books. Vanessa lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, with her husband, daughter, and a very rambunctious cat named Stripes.

Ben Clanton

Ben Clanton is the bestselling author and illustrator of the Narwhal and Jelly series. He has also made a number of picture books including It Came in the Mail, Mo’s Mustache, and Boo Who?. His latest title, The Greatest in the World!, is the first title in his new early graphic novel series called Tater Tales. Ben lives with his wife and kids in Seattle, Washington.

Jonathan Hill

 Jonathan Hill is an award-winning cartoonist, illustrator, and educator. His work has appeared in The Believer Magazine, Fantagraphics, Powell’s City of Books, and the Society of Illustrators. His graphic novel, Odessa, was a finalist for the 2021 PNBA Book Awards and won the 2021 Believer Book Award for Graphic Literature. His latest book, Tales of a Seventh Grade Lizard Boy, was included on the ALA's Best Graphic Novels for Children Reading List for 2022 and has been named an Oregon Spirit Award Honor Book. Jonathan also serves on the board of directors for Literary Arts.

Eunice and Sabrina Moyle

Founded by sisters Eunice and Sabrina Moyle in 2003, Hello!Lucky is an award-winning letterpress greeting card and design studio working with dozens of partners to create products, including Abrams’ pun-derful children’s books: My Mom Is Magical!, My Dad Is Amazing!, Super Pooper and Whizz Kid: Potty Power!, Kindness Rules!, Christmas Is Awesome!, Sloth and Smell the Roses, Go Get ‘Em, Tiger!, and Thanks a Ton! Tracy Subisak

Tracy Subisak can’t stop thinking about being back in Taipei, eating yóutiáo and dòujiāng with her amah and mama. Tracy is the daughter of a Taiwanese mother and Polish American father. Currently living in Portland, Oregon, she is the author-illustrator of Jenny Mei Is Sad, and has illustrated books including the award-winning Shawn Loves Sharks by Curtis Manley and Wood, Wire, Wings: Emma Lilian Todd Invents an Airplane by Kirsten Larson. The latest book she has illustrated is Amah Faraway.

Breena Bard

Breena Bard is an Oregon Book Award-winning author/illustrator of comics for kids and kids at heart. Her middle grade graphic novels include Wildfire (Little, Brown Ink 2023) and Trespassers (Scholastic/Graphix, 2020) and she has self-published a number of comics, including Hey Baby (2016) a comic memoir about the birth of her son, and Picket Line (2011) her Xeric-Award winning debut about environmental protests in the Redwoods. She lives in Portland, Oregon, with her husband and two kids. When she's not working on books, Breena enjoys eating pizza, watching movies, playing the drums, and exploring the outdoors with her family.
