Young adult novels about fighting for justice, which expose racism in the United States criminal justice system, and the injustices of immigration policies and the refugee crisis at the southern border.

This Is My America is Kim Johnson’s debut novel, an unflinching yet uplifting story that explores the racist injustices in the American justice system. Tracy’s father is on death row, and she’s running out of time to help him when her brother is accused of a horrible crime. Will Tracy and her family survive the uncovering of the skeletons of their Texas town’s racist history that still haunt the present?

Illegal, from award-winning author Francisco X. Stork, delves into the corruption and racism that hides under the guise of law in the U.S. An unsparing look at the asylum process and journey to find a new life in the U.S. through the story of Emiliano and his sister Sara. Escaping a violent cartel, they flee Mexico to the United States, seeking a better life and hoping to bring their pursuers to justice.

Moderated by award-winning author, journalist, editor, and speaker Kenrya Rankin (Anti-Racism: Powerful Voices, Inspiring Ideas).
