From award-winning author Lysley TenorioThe Son of Good Fortune follows an undocumented Filipino son as he navigates his relationship with his mother, an uncertain future, and the place he calls home in this story of a mother and son testing the strength of their bond to their country—and to each other. Vanessa Veselka’s The Great Offshore Grounds, longlisted for the National Book Award in Fiction, moves from Seattle’s underground to the docks of the Far North, from the hideaways of the southern swamps to the storied reaches of the Great Offshore Grounds, as a pair of half sisters and their adopted brother set of on journeys that will test their faith in one another, and their definitions of freedom.

Lysley Tenorio

Lysley Tenorio is the author of the novel The Son of Good Fortune and the story collection Monstress, named a book of the year by the San Francisco Chronicle. He is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship, a Whiting Award, a Stegner fellowship, and the Rome Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, as well as residencies from the MacDowell Colony, Yaddo, and the Bogliasco Foundation. His stories have appeared in the AtlanticZoetrope: All-Story, and Ploughshares, and have been adapted for the stage by The American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco and the Ma-Yi Theater in New York City. He is a professor at Saint Mary’s College of California.

Vanessa Veselka

Vanessa Veselka is the author of the novel Zazen, which won the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize, and The Great Offshore Grounds. Her short stories have appeared in Tin House and ZYZZYVA, and her nonfiction in GQThe AtlanticSmithsonianThe Atavist, and was included in Best American Essays and the anthology Bitchfest: Ten Years of Cultural Criticism. She has been, at various times, a teenage runaway, a sex worker, a union organizer, an independent record label owner, a train hopper, a waitress, and a mother. She lives in Portland, OR. Her latest novel, The Great Offshore Grounds, was long-listed for the National Book Award.

Megan Labrise

Megan Labrise is the editor-at-large of Kirkus Reviews. She hosts the weekly podcast Fully Booked, writes the biweekly column “Field Notes,” and interviews hundreds of authors each year. In 2015 she judged the Kirkus Prize for Fiction, one of richest literary awards in the world, with author Colson Whitehead and bookseller Nicole Magistro. She is a graduate of Reed College and NYU’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute, a former newspaper reporter, and a food writer. Her work has appeared in Edible Hudson Valley, Epicurious, Gourmet Live, Guernica Daily, Salon, and other publications. She lives in Portland.
