PEN award poets from Chile, Haiti, Iran, the Slovenian-Austrian border, and Bolivia read by their U.S. translators, followed by Q&A.

Daniel Borzutzky

Daniel Borzutzky is a poet and translator in Chicago. His most recent book is Written After a Massacre in the Year 2018. His 2016 collection, The Performance of Becoming Human received the National Book Award. Lake Michigan (2018) was a finalist for the Griffin International Poetry Prize.  His most recent translation is Paula Ilabaca Nuñez’s The Loose Pearl (2022), winner of the PEN Award for Poetry in Translation . His translation of Galo Ghigliotto's Valdivia received the 2017 National Translation Award, and he has also translated collections by Raúl Zurita, and Jaime Luis Huenún. He teaches English and Latin American and Latino Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Conor Bracken

Conor Bracken is the author of the poetry books Henry Kissinger, Mon Amour (Bull City Press) and The Enemy of My Enemy is Me (Diode Editions), as well as translator of Mohammed Khaïr-Eddine's Scorpionic Sun (CSU Poetry Center) and Jean D'Amérique's No Way in the Skin Without This Bloody Embrace (Ugly Duckling Presse). He teaches at the Cleveland Institute of Art.

Elizabeth T. Gray, Jr.

Elizabeth T. Gray, Jr. is a poet, translator, and corporate consultant. Her poetry collections include the long poem Salient (New Directions 2020) and the poetic sequence Series | India (Four Way Books, 2015). Translations include Let Us Believe in the Beginning of the Cold Season, selected poems of modern Iranian poet Forough Farrokhzad (New Directions 2022), a finalist for the 2023 PEN Prize for Poetry in Translation, and Wine & Prayer, translations of classical Persian poet Hafez. She serves on the Boards of Kimbilio Fiction, Friends of Writers, The Beloit Poetry Journal Foundation, and of Human Rights and Democracy in Iran. Tess Lewis

Tess Lewis is a writer and translator from French and German. Her translations include works by Peter Handke, Walter Benjamin, Montaigne and Philippe Jaccottet. Her awards include the 2017 PEN Translation Award for her translation of Maja Haderlap’s novel Angel of Oblivion and a Guggenheim Fellowship. Her essays and reviews have appeared in a number of publications including Granta, Bookforum, and The Los Angeles Review of Books. She is an Advisory Editor for The Hudson Review and co-curator of the Festival Neue Literature.

Lynette Yetter

Lynette Yetter is a Pushcart Prize nominated poet, 2023 PEN Award for Poetry in Translation finalist, and a panpipe-playing Buddhist lesbian artist who shares her time between La Paz, Bolivia and Portland, Oregon. Her Reed College master’s thesis led to her bilingual Spanish/English book Adela Zamudio: Selected Poetry & Prose (Fuente Fountain Books, 2022). She played panpipes on the opening title credits of the Academy Award nominated documentary Recycled Life.
