Surrealist Games for Surreal Times

November 8 - December 13, 2022
Tuesdays, 5:30-7:30 p.m. (six sessions)
925 SW Washington Street Portland, OR 97205

$285

Surrealist games are practices for circumventing our rational, reasoning mind to unlock unconscious or seemingly irrational forms of creativity. By using play, surprise, chance, and collaboration, we’ll write in ways that tap into our dreams, our imagination, and our intuition—the extraordinary spaces that help us move through challenging times.

This in-person class will introduce you to a variety of surrealist practices: automatic writing, chain writing, found poems, collage, inquiry, provocation, reinvention, experiments with objects, and techniques drawn from visual art. Some of our writing will be done individually, and some will include collaboration with the rest of the group.

No prior experience with writing is required. Since we’ll be trying out a wide array of approaches, many of which may be unfamiliar, our time in class will focus on process and play more than product, and you’ll be able to choose the methods that you find most enjoyable to take back to your personal writing practice.

Expect a lot of laughter, delight, and mystery as we break through conventional thought and behavior to deeper truths.

In-Person Class
Note: This class meets in-person at Literary Arts, 925 SW Washington. Literary Arts will require proof of full COVID-19 vaccination, or a negative test result (within 72 hours) from a healthcare provider, for entry into our in-person classes. Masks will also be required in both indoor and outdoor public settings, in accordance with current public health mandates in the state of Oregon. Please see our complete Covid-19 policy here.

Access Program
We want our writing classes and Delves to be accessible to everyone, regardless of income and background. We understand that our tuition structure can present obstacles for some people. Our Access Program offers writing class and Delve tuitions at a reduced rate. The access program for writing classes covers 60% of the class tuition. Most writing classes have at least one access spot available.

Please apply here for access rate tuition. Contact Susan Moore at susan@literary-arts.org if you have questions.
