Ashlyn Anstee, author and illustrator of Hedgehog!; Vera Brosgol, illustrator of Lyric McKerrigan, Secret Librarian; and Jory John, author of Giraffe Problems and All Right, Already! discuss making picture books with moderator Natasha Forrester Campbell of Multnomah County Library.

Ashlyn Anstee

Ashlyn Anstee grew up in a rainy city in Canada and then settled in a sunny city in the United States. She works as a story artist at JibJab/StoryBots, and in her spare time, makes tiny things out of paper. She writes, draws, illustrates, animates and is the creator of the books Hedge Hog!, No, No, Gnome! and Are We There, Yeti? Vera Brosgol

Vera Brosgol was born in Moscow, Russia, in 1984 and moved to the United States when she was five. Her first graphic novel Anya’s Ghost was published in 2011 by First Second and won Eisner, Cybils, and Harvey awards. Her picture book Leave Me Alone! was a 2017 Caldecott Honor book. She was a storyboard artist at Laika for ten years, working on animated films including Coraline and Kubo and the Two Strings. She lives in Portland, Oregon, and actually really likes camping now. Natasha Forrester Campbell

Natasha Forrester Campbell is a Youth Librarian at the Multnomah County Library’s Hollywood location. In her professional life, she does programming and reader’s advisory for kids ages birth–18 and the adults who raise and teach them including storytimes for babies through preschoolers and moderating two family graphic novel book groups for kids and their favorite adults. She is a member of the Amelia Bloomer Project committee for the American Library Association’s Feminist Task Force, and when not actively librarianing she plays board games, walks her dogs, searches for the perfect taco, and collects picture books and graphic novels like a dragon hoards gold.
