Guide: Béalleka, Tuition: $210

This seminar registration includes admission to a PAL author event.

In a tie-in with Jesmyn Ward’s PAL appearance, this Delve looks at Ward’s anthology, The Fire This Time, and James Baldwin’s 1963 treatise, The Fire Next Time (1963), to reflect upon the nation’s past and current race relations. We will also consider Baldwin’s description of White American “innocents…still trapped in a history which they do not understand,” and how persistently ignorant national memory necessitates literary responses like these collections.

Reading List: The Fire This Time edited by Jesmyn Ward (2013); The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin (1963)
