This Delve takes place at the Portland Art Museum
In this Delve, we will study the archetypal imagery of the Tarot and discuss literature inspired by the narratives imbedded within its cards. Participants will receive a foundation in the history of tarot design, explore literary connections to the cards, and learn the basics of reading cards for themselves. To enhance our study, we will view tarot cards in the Portland Art Museum’s collection and explore motifs from the tarot found in other works of art housed there. Through this exploration, we will also examine how we individually and collectively make meaning and are influenced subtly by these symbols that pervade our lives. Our texts will include classic and contemporary tarot decks, The Creative Tarot by Jessa Crispin, and a selection of poems by various authors inspired by the tarot.

SEMINAR GUIDE:
Coleman Stevenson is an illustrator, writer, and tarot practitioner. She is the artist behind the Dark Exact Tarot Deck and author of two poetry books: Breakfast: 43 Poems and The Accidental Rarefication of Pattern #5609. She is co-curator of The Doppelgänger Museum, a multimedia collaboration with artist and sound designer Aspen Farer. She has taught a variety of subjects at institutions around Portland, including creative writing, literature, folklore, culture & design, and image & text interaction.
