Not all stories want to be told in linear progression. In defense of disruption and silence, Louise Gluck reflects that “in the broken thing, human agency is oddly implied: breakage, whatever its cause, is the dark complement to the act of making; the one implies the other.” The collage form in creative non-fiction resists linear development, relying instead on fragmentation, silence, and resonance to shape ideas and story. In this workshop, we will delve into collage in art and writing to better understand the form. Students will leave class with a sketch of a new story or essay draft.

About the instructor:Wendy Noonan’s poetry has been featured in 2River View, Poor Claudia, Muzzle, Painted Bride, and Crazy Horse. Recently, her creative nonfiction was shortlisted for PRISM international’s writing contest. Wendy is an editor and writing tutor.
