When we think of traditional narrative structure, we often think of pyramids and arrows shot into the sky. We visualize the rising action, the climax, the denouement—all on a linear line. We see the Hero’s Journey. But this is only one narrative structure among many and it doesn’t fit all stories. In this workshop, we’ll experiment with alternative narrative structures for fiction and creative nonfiction.

Miranda Schmidt‘s work has appeared in TriQuarterly, Orion, Catapult, Electric Literature, The Collagist, and other journals. She has taught creative writing at the Loft, the University of Washington, and Portland Community College. Miranda grew up in the midwest and now lives in Portland. They are currently at work on a novel about haunting and a series of lyric essays that explore ecology through a queer feminist lens.
