Class meets at Literary Arts, 925 SW Washington.
Instructor: Quinn Gancedo
For writers at all levels
Limited to 10 students

In her essay “On Miniatures”, Lia Purpura writes “The miniature, a working, functioning, complete world unto itself, is not merely a “small” or “brief” thing or a “shortened” form of something larger. Minatures transcend their size, like small-but-vicious dogs; dense chunks of fudge, espresso, a drop of mercury, parasite.” In this course students will try their hand at composing a variety of their own exceedingly small but hyper-potent texts. Through brief readings and discussions we will become familiar with a broad range of miniature literary forms—from Baudelaire’s prose poems to the microfictions of Lydia Davis and the compressed essays of Renee Gladman. We will in turn use these examples as the basis for small prose works of our own. Participants will leave the class with a handful of complete short prose pieces, a toolbox of exercises for future writing, and a newfound appreciation for all things tiny.

Quinn Gancedo is a writer and educator originally from Los Angeles. He has taught writing at the California Institute of the Arts and in various community arts settings. In 2017 he was an artist-in-residence at the REEF in Downtown LA. Quinn’s fiction and poetry can be found in Diagram, Tammy, 3:AM, Potluck Mag, and elsewhere.
