Class meets at Literary Arts, 925 SW Washington

Instructor: Lee Montgomery
For dedicated writers with some experience
Limited to 10 students

This workshop is for writers who are interested in exploring and experimenting with different ways to tell stories. We will focus on fiction or nonfiction and the question of narrative form and how the shape of stories can dictate the stories that we tell.

Texts, tweets, blogs, grocery lists, complaint letters, apologies, class notes, brochures, police blotters, love letters, self-help, power points, will & testament, instructional manuals, how-tos, interviews, cross-examination, depositions, etc. are just a few of the “artifacts” available to authors and are all fair game for storytelling.

Each class will be divided between workshop (open to fiction and nonfiction), a discussion of assigned reading by established authors, and in-class exercises that help authors push the boundaries of story.

Partial reading list includes: Tillie Olson, “As I Stand Here Ironing”; Donald Barthelme, “The Arrangement”; Tim O’Brien, “The Things They Carried”; Lorrie Moore, “How to be a Writer”; Junot Diaz, “How to Date a Brown Girl”, Jamaica Kincaid, “Girl”; Samantha Hunt, “Dear Stephen Hawking”.

Lee Montgomery is the author of The Things Between UsWhose World Is This?, and Searching for Emily: IllustratedThe Things Between Us received the 2007 Oregon Book Award. Whose World Is This? received the 2007 John Simmons Iowa Short Fiction Award and was also a finalist for the 2008 Ken Kesey Award in Fiction.
