With true storytelling, we can never tell the whole shebang. Not only is autobiographical memory boldly fictionalized, true stories are expanding universes of subjective detail. We simply don’t have the stage time or page count to tell it all. So how do we decide what to leave in and what to leave out? How do we know what’s necessary, and what’s great? How do we stay honest while adjusting our stories to reach different audiences? By using core story themes!

In this two-hour workshop with Mindy Nettifee (Back Fence PDX, The Moth, Write Now Poets), you will learn how to use a core story theme to decide where to begin, where to go, how to play with tone, and how to land your meaning. It will give you the tools to tell the same story a hundred different ways. It’s a crash course in story construction for the most heart and the most impact. This workshop is designed for those new to the stage/working on personal stories, needing to deliver at meetings or in the classroom, writing a memoir and in need a new approach, or simply wanting to slay at parties.

Mindy Nettifee is one of the producers of Back Fence PDX and host for The Moth. She is an award-winning writer, performance poet and storyteller. In addition to her many years teaching the craft of live storytelling, she has taught creative writing and performance workshops at several places, including NYU and Lewis & Clark college.
