For writers at all levels

Place-based writers are often steeped in their place’s landscape, paying close attention to the natural world of the place they write: Andrea Barrett, Jesmyn Ward, Willa Cather. We will consider the natural world as integral to setting, focusing on narratives that integrate the dirt of a place into story and character. We will find inspiration in the nature of the place we are, and the places we have been.

Laura Lampton Scott’s work has appeared in Michigan Quarterly Review, Tin House and the Guardian online, Electric Literature, Monkeybicycle, Okey-Panky, and No Tokens Journal. She has served as assistant and managing editor on books in the McSweeney’s Voice of Witness series, and she’s a MacDowell Colony fellow. Laura has taught fiction at the University of Montana, Literary Arts, and Hugo House in Seattle. She’s currently seeking publication for her first novel.

SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE: Scholarships pay for the entire class tuition. All of our writing classes have at least one scholarship position available, made possible by a generous gift from Dennis Steinman. To apply, email Susan Moore, Director of Programs for Writers, at susan@literary-arts.org with your name, contact information. In addition, list three classes in order of preference, why you would like to request a scholarship, and if you have taken a Literary Arts class before. Please note that preference is not guaranteed. All scholarships are subject to availability. Scholarship availability is confirmed 1-2 weeks before the class begins.

CLASS LIAISONS: All classes have one liaison position. Liaisons receive free tuition in exchange for light duties before and after each class meeting. Contact Susan Moore at susan@literary-arts.org for more information.
