Ecological writing isn’t only about going out into the wilderness. It’s also about living in cities, seasonal backyard observations, urban ecologies, the individual experience of ecological crisis, the emotions of environmental anxiety, and the relationships we form with the nonhuman beings we share our world with. This course will help you to explore your own relationship to your environment, highlighting the interconnected nature of the world in which we live. Whether you write creative nonfiction, fiction, poetry, or something in between, this course will help you to explore ecologies through your work.

Miranda Schmidt‘s work has appeared in TriQuarterly, Orion, Catapult, Electric Literature, The Collagist, and other journals. She has taught creative writing at the Loft, the University of Washington, and Portland Community College. Miranda grew up in the midwest and now lives in Portland. They are currently at work on a novel about haunting and a series of lyric essays that explore ecology through a queer feminist lens.
