February 29 – March 28, 2020 (no meeting March 21)
Saturdays, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Instructor: Wendy Noonan
For writers at all levels

Most of us don’t want to relive painful experiences, yet as writers, we are often compelled to frame them through narrative and lyric. In this four week class, we will read, discuss, and write various ‘frames’ of lived, traumatic experience, culminating in the completion of a draft of a nonfiction story or essay that circles, confronts and explores a powerful event and its aftereffects. We will discuss the roles of form, language, scene, memory and research in grief prose. Outside reading (The Undying by Anne Boyer) paired with these discussions will spring board students into their own writing. In the last two classes, everyone will have an opportunity to receive feedback on their drafts in a supportive workshop setting. All students will leave with a workshopped draft of a story or an essay.

Text: The Undying, by Anne Boyer
