SUMMARY:Hybrid Memoir Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Hybrid memoirists challenge outdated distinctions between academic\, personal and creative discourses and disrupt popular notions of voice and narrative arc. In this class\, we examine how hybrid memoirists strategize to tell stories that diverge from conventional forms of memoir and essay writing. In addition to practicing various poetic and nonfiction forms\, participants will have the opportunity to deep dive into topics that interest them\, such as art\, literature\, history\, theory\, myth\, film\, fashion\, erotics\, music\, science\, and more. The ultimate goal is to understand and practice writing that is at once intimate and intellectually rigorous\, a space particular readers will want to occupy even if the subject matter is bizarre or treacherous. Writing prompts and drafting techniques will allow students to experiment with structure and voice. Outside reading assignments and in-class writing and revision exercises will encourage experimentation and writing play. Students will have an opportunity to get feedback on their drafts in an inspired\, supportive workshop setting. \nAccess Program\nWe want our writing classes and seminars to be accessible to everyone\, regardless of income and background. We understand that our tuition structure can present obstacles for some people. Our Access Program offers writing class and seminar tuitions at a reduced rate.
