George Eliot: Daniel Deronda
$205
Young and beautiful Gwendolen Harleth is poised at a roulette table at a German spa, where she is observed by Daniel Deronda, an exceptionally handsome upper-class Englishman. Later, a reversal of fortune forces Gwendolen toward a troubled marriage with a rich older man and Daniel encounters Mirah Lapidoth, a troubled young actress and singer. In Daniel’s attempt to help Mirah, he is drawn into London’s Jewish community and a journey of self-discovery toward an unexpected heritage and destiny, while Daniel’s and Gwendolen’s continuing chance encounters complicate their lives and actions.
This five-week Delve will explore this big triple-decker late-Victorian novel filled with ambitious ideas, English manners, morals, and class and religious prejudices. “I meant everything in the book to be related to everything else,” Eliot wrote about her last (and possibly most ambitious) novel, first published in 1876.
