He Knew He Was Right: Anthony Trollope

October 2 - November 6, 2023, Mondays, 6:30 to 8:30 (six sessions)
925 SW Washington Street Portland, OR 97205

$240

Nathaniel Hawthorne marveled at Anthony Trollope’s talent for conveying the truth of human experience, declaring his fictional world to be “just as real as if some giant had hewn a great lump out of the earth, and put it under a glass case, with all its inhabitants going about their daily business, and not suspecting that they were made a show of.” Trollope was impressively prolific, publishing forty-seven novels, several volumes of short stories, an autobiography, plays, essays, and reviews. He Knew He Was Right (1869) is the story of Louis and Emily Trevelyan, whose marriage is ruined by Louis’s obsessive, stubborn jealousy. The novel is an incisive commentary on marriage, gender inequality, and the complexity of human relationships.

In this seminar we will explore the novel’s nineteenth-century historical and social context and consider the ways in which its themes continue to resonate for us today. We will also discuss the novel’s reception, influence, and adaptations.
