Eileen Chang (張愛玲) Reading Nook, first floor
Eileen Chang (1920–1995) was a prominent Chinese and American writer, translator, and screenwriter known for her novels and stories exploring love, gender relations, and social class. Coming from a distinguished but troubled family, Chang began writing at a young age and gained recognition in the 1940s for works such as The Golden Cangue and Love in a Fallen City.
Political challenges led to her departure from China and the banning of her work in the People’s Republic of China. After moving to the United States, she continued to write in Chinese and English, including The Rice Sprout Song (1955) and Lust, Caution (1979). Chang is celebrated for her irony, imagery, and lasting influence on modern Chinese literature.
