Starting the Story

The short story is a powerful medium of storytelling.This workshop will explore how to get started on writing the short story– thinking through inspirations, exploring ways of writing compelling short story beginnings, and focussing on how to draw the reader in as you move the story forward from the beginning to the end.
This is a free drop in class offered at the Portland Book Festival. All attendees must acquire a wristband before entering the class venue. Space is limited.
Margaret Muthee
Margaret Muthee is a creative writer from Kenya, currently based in Portland. She is a recent graduate of the Portland State MFA in Creative Writing program, where she taught fiction and won the Nathan Cogan Award, Tom Doulis Award, among others. Margaret has published short stories in OneThrone Magazine, Lawino Magazine, Brittle Paper, Agbowo Magazine, and Lolwe Magazine. Her short stories were shortlisted for the Iskanchi Book Prize in 2025.
Margaret has also published various children’s books with Nabu.org. and StoryMoja Africa. She enjoys teaching writing, as well as organising literary events. Margaret has previously worked with Kwani Trust and the Macondo International Literary Festival in Kenya. She is currently working on a novel manuscript.
