STRANGE DESCENT: SUPERNATURAL NOVELS

January 16-February 6, 2025, Thursdays, 6:30-8:30 (4 sessions)
716 SE Grand Portland, OR

$165

Strange and surreal, mysterious and dream-like, when “the supernatural” is conjured in story we find ourselves lifted out of the ordinary, material world and into more spectacular realms. In this seminar we’ll read novels that embrace this otherworldliness, stretching the familiar first into the unknown, then to the far reaches of personal and collective transformation. For the protagonists of these stories, the supernatural often materializes as an essential escape route out of oppressive, banal circumstances towards personal healing. In defiance of patriarchal confines—and often because of them—we watch as these figures embrace a call to venture into their own mystery, decipher the symbols key to their personal mythic landscapes, cross frightening and surreal psychic terrains, and emerge with a vision that might reshape their worlds and ours.

Texts:
Helen Oyeyemi, The Icarus Girl
Hiroko Oyamada, The Hole
Leonora Carrington, The Hearing Trumpet

This seminar takes place at our new location at 716 SE Grand.
