Write the Self: Weekend Intensive

February 1 and 2, 2025, Saturday and Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
716 SE Grand Portland, OR

$175

This weekend course is for all levels of writers and readers.

We will read and discuss excerpts from contemporary authors who write the self (or write from the basis of personal experience) such as Annie Ernaux, Sarah Manguso, Leslie Jamison, Rachel Cusk, Edouard Louis, Garth Greenwell, Claudia Rankine and others, in addition to discussing the craft of writing on self.
Class assignments:

Readings: Frances will provide five short excepts and three craft articles ahead of class.

Writing: Each day, we will spend about an hour working on writing the self, based on prompts. You will not need to provide any writing ahead of time. This is not a workshop in the traditional sense and although there may be an opportunity to discuss your writing process and possibly read from your work, feedback will not be provided.

Class outcomes:
• exposure to contemporary writers who write the self, namely personal essay, fiction, memoir and autofiction
• inspiring community dialogue and critique of contemporary authors who write the self
• discussion and queries on the craft of writing the self
• time to write and the opportunity to have material to build on outside of this course.

Access Program
We want our writing classes and seminars to be accessible to everyone, regardless of income and background. We understand that our tuition structure can present obstacles for some people. Our Access Program offers writing class and seminar tuitions at a reduced rate. Most Delves  have at least one access spot available.

Please apply here for access rate tuition. Contact Susan Moore at susan@literary-arts.org if you have questions.

Liaison position
Every in-person class and seminar at Literary Arts has one liaison position. Liaisons perform specific duties for each class meeting. If you are a liaison for a class or seminar, the full amount of your tuition is covered by Literary Arts.

Apply here for the liaison position.
