Writing the Non-Fiction Book Proposal

Monday, October 28, 5:00-8:00 p.m. (one session)

$95

Explore the necessary elements of writing a nonfiction book proposal from outline to “comp titles”, how to use them effectively, and where you can let your personal style shine through.

In nonfiction, most books are sold “on proposal” which means writers connect with an agent and publisher for a book deal before writing the entire book. This can keep writers from spending time and money reporting a story that won’t sell but can also be daunting—what should a book proposal look like and how can you convey an entire book in twenty or thirty pages?

Many writers dread writing a nonfiction book proposal when, in reality, it’s one of the best tools in your toolbox. The process of writing one can help you flesh out whether there’s enough to your idea for a full book, figure out who you’re writing for, and find a structure that works for your project—all without finishing an entire book draft first!

This class is a part of Portland Book Festival 2024. Portland Book Festival passes sold separately. For more information about Portland Book Festival, visit pdxbookfest.org.
