[by Eric Jennings, WITS Intern]
We had a wonderful turnout at the Cleveland High School WITS reading hosted by the Independent Publishing Resource Center (IPRC). Students, parents, Cleveland faculty, writers, and community members joined one another at the IPRC to hear Cleveland High School writers share the imaginative, meticulous, and compelling work they wrote and revised during their WITS residencies. Among the pieces students shared were personal narratives, science fiction, comics, and a wide range of poetry, from “found” poems to epic ones. We were also lucky to hear work from our two writers-in-residence, Lisa Eisenberg and Melissa Reeser Poulin. We gratefully acknowledge the support of Vanessa Hughes and Eric Levine, the teachers at Cleveland High School who hosted our writers-in-residence. We would also like to thank the Independent Publishing Resource Center for collaborating on comic artist Lisa Eisenberg’s WITS residency, and for sharing their publishing and performance space in Southeast Portland.
