Tolstoy’s Short Stories

January 13 - February 3, 2025, Mondays, 6:30-8:30 p.m. (four sessions)
716 SE Grand Portland, OR

$165

No exploration of Tolstoy is complete without a reading of his best short stories. In four sessions we will look at a few of the small masterpieces from his later years, including “The Death of Ivan Ilych,” “Master and Man,” “Father Sergius,” and “Hadji Murat.” Here we see Tolstoy at the pinnacle of his story-telling prowess.

The Pevear and Volokhonky translation, available from Vintage Classics is recommended for this seminar. For the sake of convenience, the class will refer to the page numbers of this edition. The first assignment is to read “The Death of Ivan Ilych.”
