Huck and James: Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Percival Everett’s James

January 22 - February 26, 2025, Wednesdays, 6:30-8:30 p.m. (six sessions)
Literary Arts, 716 SE Grand, Portland, 97214

Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn remains one of the most widely read and studied texts in the American literary canon, as well as the subject of recent reappraisals in light of its problematic language, as well as its treatment of its Black characters and of race in general. Percival Everett’s recent novel, James, offers a strategic and moving retelling of Twain’s story from the perspective of its central Black character, the escaped slave known to Huck as “Jim.” Toni Morrison remarked about Huckleberry Finn that if we can set aside our preconceptions about the book, ‘the novel becomes a more beautifully complicated work.’ In this six week Delve seminar, we will explore Twain’s masterpiece, the way it engages with Everett’s remarkable new novel, and the way both books offer a ‘more beautifully complicated’ picture of America.
