LEONORA CARRINGTON: SURREAL TRANSFORMATIONS

August 28 - October 1, 2025, Thursdays, 6:00-8:00 p.m. (six sessions)
716 SE Grand Ave Portland, OR 97214

$265

While better known for her extraordinarily imaginative paintings, the British-born Mexican artist Leonora Carrington was also a dazzling writer, conjuring stories that alchemically transform the banal and infuse the imagination with a smorgasbord of dreamlike images. Brandishing a surrealism that outflanks even the most worthy of her male counterparts, Carrington creates worlds in which the human and animal realms blend, myths pour freely into the everyday, and symbols seethe with occult mystery. With uncanny wit, Carrington spirits us past an achingly conventional world into a landscape where the feminine, the funny, the magical, and the profound meet, transforming the trivial into something gloriously lifeaffirming.Over the course of six weeks we’ll read her opus The Hearing Trumpet, a remarkable revolutionary novel that, according to Luis Buñuel “liberates us from the miserable reality of our days,” as well as the long out of print The Stone Door—a wild, pancultural adventure novel, recently republished. We’ll conclude with her collected short stories—a treasure trove of post-modern fairy tales, as sinister as they are hilarious. Together we’ll explore the symbols, myths, and otherworldly modes that Carrington uses to generate transformative storytelling and joyfully ponder its beguiling effects.
