The Big Dig x OPB’s Stop Requested LIVE: a conversation about what to do with Portland’s highways

Tue, October 28 from 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm PDT

Every American city is divided by crumbling old highways. Every city is trying to figure out what to do with them. Join Ian Coss, host of the Peabody-Award winning podcast “The Big Dig,” for a live taping about Portland’s own attempts to solve that puzzle, and undo the harms of the past. Coss will be joined on stage by OPB’s Weekend Edition and “Stop Requested” host Lillian Karabaic, along with special guests who have lived and breathed this issue, from Harbor Drive to I-5.

The taping will be 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday October 28th at Literary Arts in Portland. An audience Q&A will follow the taping.

“The Big Dig” from GBH News explores Boston’s controversial effort to bury a downtown highway – once the most expensive public works project in American history – and the lessons that it holds for the ambitious infrastructure ideas of today. The series was named one of the best podcasts of 2023 by the New Yorker and one of the best podcasts of all time by Time Magazine.

“Stop Requested” is a multi-part series from OPB about a journey through rural Oregon by public transit in the state’s most remote areas. Over 14 days and more than 30 buses, OPB’s Lillian Karabaic and Prakruti Bhatt explore the challenges faced by rural communities as they navigate limited transit options. This series reveals the vital role of public transportation in keeping rural Oregonians connected and celebrates the beauty of Oregon’s rural places and people.
