Unreliable Historians: Reclaiming Truth and Agency in Creative Writing

Who writes our shared histories? Who gets deemed “unreliable?” Through generative writing exercises and discussion of examples from Brody Parrish Craig’s The Patient is an Unreliable Historian, we’ll write poems together that challenge truth, combat erasure, and reclaim space for lived experience. Topics include saneism, gender, queerness & the power of narrative/madness.
All experiences welcome, especially centering TLGBQ+ writers. Participants are encouraged to bring in a printed copy of any text or document that resonates with them as a narrative or writing that disregards their truth, history, or lived experience in some way. Please make a copy or scan you can alter in workshop space//do not bring original if need in perfect form! Possible examples include inaccurate news articles, textbooks, documents, med charts, legal records, frustrating emails/correspondences, legislation, policy documents, and more.
Access Program
We want our writing classes and seminars to be accessible to everyone, regardless of income and background. We understand that our tuition structure can present obstacles for some people. Our Access Program offers writing class and seminar tuitions at a reduced rate. Most writing classes have at least one access spot available.

Liaison position
Every in-person class and seminar at Literary Arts has one liaison position. Liaisons perform specific duties for each class meeting. If you are a liaison for a class or seminar, the full amount of your tuition is covered by Literary Arts.

Brody Parrish Craig
Originally from Louisiana, Brody Parrish Craig (they/them) is a queer southern writer who upheaves expectations to open spaces for connection, unlearning & change. They are the author of The Patient is an Unreliable Historian & Boyish, winner of the 2019 Omnidawn Poetry Chapbook Contest. They are editor of TWANG, a regional collection of trans, gender nonconforming & nonbinary creators tied to the south/Midwest .
