Ursula K Le Guin: Always Coming Home

January 14 - February 18, 2025, Tuesdays, 6:00-8:00 p.m. (six sessions)
Literary Arts, 716 SE Grand Ave, Portland, 97214

$250

Always Coming Home by Ursula K. Le Guin is considered by some to be her magnum opus, yet somehow it remains one of her most overlooked texts. Sometimes reading more like ethnographic study than a novel, Always Coming Home depicts a post-apocalyptic Northern California, except instead of showing the violence & chaos of the apocalypse, this story takes place so long after the fall of the United States, Le Guin is able to show us a new society complete with songs, myths, & wholly new languages. Perhaps Le Guin’s most radical and subversive work, this inventive text criticizes our current society by imagining a humanity with a completely new relationship with the universe.

Discuss Le Guin’s visionary work about the Kesh, survivors of ecological catastrophe living in a utopian community on the Northern California coast.
