Through mini-lectures, in-class writing, and lots of workshopping, you will explore matters of storytelling (such as plotting and character development), craft (what makes a good sentence? a good scene?), and motivation (how in the world am I supposed to write a novel in only eight weeks?) to get the work done.

This is a boot-camp-style class designed for aspiring novelists who have a clear fictional project in mind and who can commit to a rigorous eight-week schedule of reading and writing. You do not need permission to register, but you should have some prior experience in writing. And if you’ve got an outline for your planned novel, even better. Each participant will present work to the class for discussion four times.

Emily Chenoweth is the author of the novel Hello Goodbye (Random House), which was a finalist for the Oregon Book Award and was named one of the top ten Northwest books of 2009 by The Oregonian. As a ghostwriter and cowriter, she’s penned a dozen other novels, many of which were New York Times bestsellers. A former English teacher and fiction editor at Publishers Weekly, Emily has also written for People, Self, Tin House, Portland Monthly, and Bookforum.

SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE: Scholarships pay for the entire class tuition. All of our writing classes have at least one scholarship position available, made possible by a generous gift from Dennis Steinman. All scholarships are subject to availability.

CLASS LIAISONS: All classes have one liaison position. Liaisons receive free tuition in exchange for light duties before and after each class meeting.

CLASS CANCELLATION POLICY:
If you need to cancel your registration for a writing or storytelling class, the following refund schedule applies:

• 3 days or more before a class, refunds will be issued, less a $35 processing fee.
• 3 days or more before class starts, if you prefer to convert your registration to a credit for an upcoming class, you can receive a tuition credit for an upcoming class for the full amount of your tuition, good for one year.
• 48 hours or less before a class begins, no refund or tuition credit is available.

If Literary Arts has to cancel a class, you will receive a full refund.
