Student Work: Identity Knock, Knocking by Danielle Newman

Identity Knock, Knocking
By Danielle Newman From Marshall High School
Published in the 2006-2007 WITS Anthology Mostly What I’m Made Of

Knock, knock.
Who’s there?

There is nothing.

Nothing you can’t do.
Nothing you can’t see.
Nothing you can’t understand.
Nothing you can’t accomplish.

Knock, knock.
Who’s there?

Yours.

Your hopes.
Your dreams.
Your thoughts.
your fears.
Your beliefs.
Your morals.
Your aspirations.
Your strengths.
Your weaknesses.
Your will.

Knock, knock.
Who s there?

You.

You as you were.
You as you have been.
You as you could be.
You as you should be.
You as you will be.

…If only you would just let me in.
…Let yourself in.
