Frequently Asked Question about Oregon Literary Fellowships

Applications for the Oregon Literary Fellowships are due in our office at 925 SW Washington in Portland by 5:00 p.m. Friday, June 26th.

You can hand deliver your application! On Friday from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., Literary Arts will be serving complimentary wine and/or beer to applicants who drop off their applications in person. Wine and/or beer must be consumed on the premises, in accordance with our liquor license.

Here’s a list of frequently asked questions. We will be adding to this list between now and Friday as questions come in.

Can my writing sample be printed double sided?
Yes.

For my prose sample, can I submit excerpts from more than one work or does it have to be one continous excerpt?
You can submit excerpts from more than one work, as long as the total writing sample doesn’t exceed 25 pages, single sided. Or 12 pages double-sided plus one page single sided.

If I’m submitting part of a novel, is it better to submit the first 25 pages, or something from later in the novel?
It’s entirely up to you. Applicants are encourage to submit a writing sample that best represents their abilities as a writer.

Is it better to submit published or unpublished work?
Applicants are encourage to submit a writing sample that best represents their abilities as a writer.

Can I submit photocopies from a magazine where my work appeared?
The writing sample should be submitted in manuscript format, rather than photocopied from magazines or other publications.

Can I submit in more than one genre?
No.

Can I submit illustrated work?
No.

What is the fellowship amount for 2016 fellowships?
$3,000.

Who are the judges and what are they looking for in an application?
The judges change every year; they are instructed to select fellowship recipients based on the writing sample that is submitted with the application. Our judges are out-of-state and the judges are announced when the fellowship recipients are announced in January 2016.

Can I bring my fellowship application in in person?
Yes! Literary Arts is located at 925 SW Washington. Our office hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
