In Memoriam: Barry Lopez, 1945–2020

Literary Arts is deeply saddened to hear that writer Barry Lopez passed away on December 25, 2020, at the age of 75 after a long battle with cancer.

Barry was involved with Literary Arts for virtually our entire existence. He spoke at Portland Arts & Lectures in 1992, hosted the Oregon Book Awards in 2006, received our CES Distinguished Writer Award in 2008, participated in the relaunched Festival in 2015 (and other years), and was an important and trusted advisor to nearly all of the Executive Directors of Literary Arts from our beginning in the 1980s.  Most recently, Barry was a member of the Strunk & White Society, and in 2019 allowed Literary Arts to host the national launch of his magisterial final work of nonfiction, Horizon.

This Sunday at 7:00 p.m. PST, we will broadcast his most recent event with us on OPB Radio.
