Writers in the Schools Returns to In-Person Classrooms for 2021-22

The Writers in the Schools (WITS) program will return to in-person classrooms this fall in five public high schools. WITS writers will teach in Creative Writing, English, Radio Broadcasting, Journalism, Science Fiction, and Language Arts classes.

Since March of 2020, WITS writers have adapted to teaching students in virtual classrooms, and via video lesson. Thanks to their adaptability and creativity, students were served without interruption throughout the 2020-21 school year in Google Meet and Zoom. This year, X students will be published in the 2020-21 WITS Anthology, Curiosity in Ones and Zeros, which will launch at the Portland Book Festival on Saturday, November 13th. The event will feature student readers who wrote and created during remote WITS residencies last fall and spring semesters.

This school year, WITS writers are excited to be back in classrooms at McDaniel High School, Benson High School, Gresham High School, Parkrose High School, and Franklin High School. WITS writers will teach in eighteen classrooms and partner with twelve teachers.
