Gabriel García Márquez: The Scandal of the Century
Gabriel García Márquez began his writing career as a journalist & once referred to the profession as “the best in the world.” While the international literary community celebrated him as one of the greatest-ever fiction authors, he never ceased writing journalism. The Scandal of the Century was first published in English in 2019, & this collection of journalism & political commentary is a testament to the expansiveness of his oeuvre that too often gets simplified here in the US. The essays range from the US embargo on Cuba, to nostalgia for his famous hometown Aracataca, to the existence of telepathy. Near the end of his life, Gabo said, “I don’t want to be remembered for One Hundred Years of Solitude, nor for the Nobel Prize, but rather for the newspaper.” This seminar will read the collection in its entirety, following the author’s wish of seeing him as the journalist he always was.
