ABOUT THE WORKSHOPS:

George Estreich

Teach Your Readers: Creative Nonfiction and Making the Most of What You Know
A workshop with George Estreich
6:00 – 8:0p.m. Wednesday, May 30th
A writer is a teacher. We value writers of essay, memoir, and nonfiction, not only for their finely wrought sentencesor experiments in form, but also for what they can teach us. In this workshop, we’ll talk about how to move from topics to subjects. Reading brief published excerpts, using writing prompts, and discussing your writing, we’ll look at the imaginative possibilities of what you already know.

Heather Vogel Frederick

Much Ado About Middle Grade: Mastering Setting, Character & Plot
A workshop with Heather Vogel Frederick
3:30 – 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 31st
Middle-grade fiction is a place where anything can happen, from a voyage aboard a 19th-century whaling ship to a school called Hogwarts, from an espionage organization where the secret agents have whiskers and tails to a spell gone awry that leaves a seventh grader spouting toads. But when the sky’s the limit, how do you choose a surefire setting, populate it with memorable characters, and develop a compelling storyline that is catnip to editors and readers alike? Come prepared to listen, to write, and to share in this hands-on workshop geared to helping you fuel your creative fire and overcome fear of the blank page.
