A poem from Off-Key
Notebook: She and the Moths
In sympathy with moths
that beat themselves silly against her window glass
she keeps the lights turned off
and nightly stumbles blindly through the house.
About Jean Esteve
Born 1929, Jean Esteve came to poetry early and late. She was hard at it in 2nd through 6th grades for the Manhasset, N.Y. school magazine. She began again some fifty years later, four children grown, quill evolved into word processer, and the Tillamook County Library’s few shelves providing material for studying what poets had been up to all those years.
“Jean Esteve’s poems are ‘fragments [of] the brilliance of the setting sun / leaving splintered light, confetti on my lap.’ Her collection Off-Key is tender and cutting, and absolutely brilliant.” -Leah Maines, author of Beyond the River
